WPT Montreal Main Event Qualifier

I finished 9th out of 85.  7 place were paid with the top 4 getting packages.  I'm very bitter with my result still, even after a night of sleep.

I played very well overall, but still disappointed with how I played my knock out hand.  I'm without my hand histories at the moment, so I won't be able to get into a ton of details, but I've got a few stories to tell.  The first was that I risked my tournament life within the first 10 hands.  It's not something I really wanted to do, but there was the crazy player who was just betting huge that I knew I should try to take advantage of.

I had JJ UTG and raised to 60 (blinds 10/20, and I had 4.4k stack and villain had me covered).   It folded to him and he raised to 480!!!  I just called, with the intention of check/shoving any reasonable flop.  I got a perfect flop on 6 4 2.  I checked, he bet something like 1500 and I shoved my 4k.  He called with his A6o, and 20% of the time I'm done.  Thankfully I held and was chip leader 10 minutes into the tourney!

I think I stayed at that 9k chip stack for 2 hours.  The structure was 20 minute blinds and we were super deep, so I wasn't in the mood to get overly aggressive and bleed my chips like I have done in the past.  I did work my stack up eventually to 20k and then got it all-in vs a 10k stack only to lose AKs < AQs.  After that I got more aggressive, and started stealing and stole enough to get back up to the 20k stack again.  Then this and happened:  A short stack of 7k opened shoved, I think it might have been 200/400 or 250/500 and given the opponent, my 99 would be pretty good against his range.  However, the only "poor" player at this table, who had me covered, flat called the bet.  Since it was a call, I knew that it could not be a premium pair, so I shoved over his bet.  I was really hoping he'd fold to add dead money to the pot, he called and I was at risk again.  It was TT (shorty), AQo (poor) 99 (me).  I flop a 9, shorty turns a T and so shorty wins the main pot (20k) and I win the side pot  of 28k.

From there I win a bunch of all-ins from short stacks, and get my stack up to it's highest point of almost 70k.  I lost a flip for 10k when AJs < 55, so I was at 60k whe the tournament critical hand occurred: I had AKo on the button with blind of 300/600 I believe.  UTG+1 raises to 1800.  I decide to simply call since I don't want to deal with a 4-bet and the raise was large enough to deter the blinds from calling without decent hands.  The SB called which made me cautious as he was someone I thought was decent.  The flop came K82r.  Both players checked to me and the pot was 5600.  I bet relatively small, 2400 with the intention of folding to a check-raise from SB.  He just called and UTG min-raised, which confused me.  Depending on the player, the was either super strong or super weak. I decided to be passive and call and to my great relief, SB folded despite great odds.  The 2h turn put out a flush draw and he checked.  This meant his check-raise was weak.  I settled on my first overbet shove of the night.  There was about 18k in the pot and he had about 30k left.  I shoved and he called with KJo and managed to spike his 3 outer on the river.(I'm nauseous again just writing that).

I was left with 20k, and 3 big stacks to my left, which hampered me after that. Eventually, I got blinded down to 14k and then stole the blinds and antes 3 consecutive hands with 68s, 33, and 33.  Given that, I should not have have tried this:  The player who hit his 3 outer min raised to 2k from MP.  It folded to me in the BB and I shoved my QJo.  He had been mucking to other short stack 3B all-ins, but given my activity, he could easily get called light.  I should have waited since I was up to 20BBs.  He ended up calling with ATh and I couldn't catch up.  I had plenty of time to wait at 20BB, so I consider this a mistake.

So there you have it.  I can try again, in two weeks (I'm busy next Sunday), or move on.  I don't know what I'm going to do yet.

Overall, I was profitable, which wasn't expected and was a nice bonus!  Also, I feel like the starting hands tables I've been using really helped me, and kept me aggressive but not too much so, which was probably a leak of mine.  As a result, it took my tournament game to a higher level, which is a big positive too.

MTL WPT qualifying (4)

Results from last post:
+$369.25
1x$300 ticket.

Results since last post:
$6 0/0/4
$33 0/0/2

I only played Wednesday night, it was shit!  I made some terrible mistakes, especially in the $33, so I decided to take a day off yesterday, and I will be back at it in 30 minutes.  I'm still excited for Sunday.  I'm afraid I'll be too eager and bust out early, but hopefully if that happens, I can qualify for the following Sunday as well.  We'll see...

Just finished tonight's session.  Bombed out again.  Tonight, the cards did not run out very well at all!

Overall:
+$234.25
1x$300 ticket.
$6 - 4/3/13 (Win/place/loss)
$33 - 3/0/8

MTL WPT qualifying (3)

Results from last post:
+$103
1x$300 ticket.

Results since last post:
$6 2/1/7 (1 pending)
$33 1/0/2

I've had a good couple of days!  Qualified for both of the $33 tourneys with tickets won from the $6 qualifiers, and then I just placed in tonight's $33 for another $300 in tournament cash!  I've done a better job playing with shorter stacks.  The $33 has a slow enough structure that I can wait a very long time before having to make any sort of moves.

I think the most interesting note for the past two days is how the caliber of players in the tournies has gotten better.  There are more 20/15 players than 60/0 (VPIP/PFR), which actually helps me when I'm short stacked as they won't call the short stack all-ins as liberally as a 60/0 would.

So, today's profit is -(6*7)+8.25+2*33-2*33+300=+266.25.  This brings us up to

$369.25
1x $300 ticket (I'm registered for this Sunday @ 3:20!).

Lets see what we can do in the next 3 days!

MTL WPT qualifying (2)

Results from the last post:
+$171
1x$33 ticket
1x$300 ticket

Results since the last post:

(win/place/lose)
$6 qualifiers: 0/2/2
$33 qualifiers: 0/0/3

So-so results.  I made some mistakes that I regret, and have come to realize that I ran well the first 3 days.  I need to refocus my play as I'm falling a little too much on auto-pilot and allowing myself to get occasionally distracted.

In the $6 tournies, I bubbled one for an $11 cash, and the other didn't have enough players to pay a ticket (only 4 played) and I won that one for $11.  So, overall, I was only ($2).

In the $33 tourneys, I've been getting knocked out mid pack (10/24, 14/23, 23/34).  The success I had in the first 3 days stemmed from me getting into good situations and/or getting lucky to double my stack early.  I play very well when I have more chips than the others.  When I'm a little below average, I have a tougher time picking my spots correctly.  So what has been happening is that I'll be around starting stack (3k) at the blinds of 50/100 or 60/120.  I'm trying to continue to follow my opening hard range tables, but at the same time try to find good spots to accumulate chips.  I'll have to possibly review the knockout hands more and see if I'm trying to be too aggressive in marginal spots.

I used 1 ticket and bought in for the other two, so I'm ($66) here.

Overall results:
+$103
1x$300 ticket.

I also spent some time checking out today's $300 tourney.  It was my daugther's birthday today so I wasn't able to play.  The tourney started at 3:20P and was still running at 8:00P, so I took advantage and wrote up some notes on player finishes.  There were 79 players total, and it ended up lasting 5h40m, paying 3 WPT seats, with 4th getting 2.5k, 5th getting 1.5k and 6th getting 1k.  The one thing I noticed was how many of the qualifiers were knocked out in the first 1/4 of the players.  The blinds are 20 minutes, so I'll have to remind myself that there will be plenty of play at each level without having to push.

Wish me luck this week.  If all goes well, I will be using my ticket in next Sunday's $300 tourney and hopefully I'll earn myself another couple of seats as well.

WPT in Montreal

The WPT is coming to Montreal in November.  Party Poker is offering satellites to the $3000+$300 main event, and I'm going to try and qualify.  Check out the qualifying structure here.  The satellites started on Monday and I have been playing as much as I can within my schedule, which means the two $6 at 9:15P and 10:45P, and the $33 at 8:45P.

So far I have played 5 $6 qualifiers and 4 $33 qualifiers.  I got lucky on Tuesday because Party Poker's servers had issues and they pushed the 3:20PM $33 qualifier, which was maybe 10 minutes in progress, to 8PM to finish.  So I was able to play an extra $33

Results so far have been excellent.
Monday night: $6 1/1, $33 0/1
Tuesday night: $6 0/2, $33 1/2
Wednesday night: $6 1/2, $33 1/1

I've bought in for $6*5 + $33*3 and currently have 1 $300 ticket and 1 $33 ticket remaining.  When you win a second entry to the same event, Party credits your account with tournament dollars, so I also now have $300 tournament dollars to use on my future buy-ins.  I've outlayed $123 cash, so I'm up $177 case with $333 worth of tournament tickets left.

I'll keep you guys up to speed again on the week-end for how things go tomorrow and Friday.

Preparation

Hello world!!! (yes, I've been programming lately...) It's been a while, let's get to business.

I've heard that this year's Montreal Open, which used to be sponsored by Full Tilt, is now going to be the Montreal Party Poker Classic (I don't think I need to say who the sponsor is). I've been having some good cash-game live results, so my bankroll is ready to play in it. So I decided to prepare by playing in 3 live tournaments, since I haven't played a live tourney in a while.

Tonight was tourney #1: The $100+$10+$5 deepstack "turbo" at www.playgroundpoker.ca. It's the first time I played this tourney. I say "turbo", because I think this tourney plays less fast than their $50+$10+$5 regular. The regular plays with 20 minute blinds and a 16k starting stack (after the dealer add-on) and the turbo is 15 minute blinds, but the starting stack is 30k.

My goal was to be a little less active than normal. I like to open pots, and raise a lot, but my experience has been that you still end up with a lot of callers. So you really have to get a piece of the flop, because if you c-bet with air, someone's calling and you can't tell if they have top-pair, bottom-pair, draw or what. I definitely achieved my goal. I played very few hands early, and yet, I still got plenty of called when I raised, with usually some much better than average holdings.

By the first break I had chipped up to around 40k, but more importantly, I felt like I had a good feel for the players at my table, since I spent more time watching them play than playing myself. I got moved to a second table when I ran pretty good, and was able to get good value on some strong hands. I managed to chip up to 90k by the second break.

After that break, it didn't take long to get moved to my third table. I had a decent stack relative to the field, with 40 out of 75 left, but my new table had 3 players who seriously dwarfed my stack. So even though I had 90k at the 1k/2k/200 level, I knew that I wanted to stay tight. But, I started getting cards. I called a raise in middle position with 22 trying to out flop the chip leader, and missed. Then I raised middle position with 99, got 3 callers. Flopped 943 2 spades, and bet about 1/3 of the pot, but everyone folded. I got QhQc a few hands later in early position, and since I was active, I had a good feeling there was going to be a 3-bet to my raise (4.6k). Two to my left, moved all for 41k, and I snap called as I didn't expect any one to bet AA or KK that way. He had AkKh, and out flopped me big time with Kc7h3h. I didn't hit a Q on the turn or river, so I was now down to 56k. About 7 hands later, I called a raise (6k @ 1.2k/2.4k/200) from the chip leader with AA in middle position. I had the other 2 big stacks, and the guy who doubled with AK, in the 3 seats to my left. I felt there was a good chance someone might pull a squeeze play, and sure enough the SB did. He raised to 15k total. The original raiser folded, and I stalled, pretended to think and then raised to 35k. He thought for about 15 seconds and then moved me all in. I snap called, and he said "You have Aces don't you". I showed them. The dealer peeled the cards for the flop, and the door card was a 7. Fuck. The next card out was an Ace! Sweet, A73 flop, 4 turn, case 7 river! Fuck me! Beaten by quads.

While it sucks to go out that way, I actually feel really good about the way I played. I plan on going once per week over the next two weeks, and I want to continue and build on the way I played today.

The MPPC is going to have a ton of weak, charity type of players there, so the key will be to get the most value from them, before they spew their chips at the table.

UB is dead

Those following online poker know that many sites that don't let American's play, except Poker Stars, have struggled to have players. This is especially true for the Cereus Network (UB/AP) which haven't exactly been the poster children for ethical business practices. Despite the scandals, I'll always have a soft spot for the site as it was the first one I joined and was one where I had much success.

Today, as I was reviewing my stats for the year, I go to every site I have money on to confirm balances and player points. I don't have much money on UB, withdrew most of it when I could, but still have a few bucks as well as some tournament $ there. I saw their opening page which says "3420 players on 526 tables". Out of curiosity, I wanted to see if there was any Omaha or O/8 being played. There wasn't a single person on a cash table. In fact, there wasn't a soul on and Stud variant or Mixed game table. There are 6 people playing limit (actually, they are all sitting alone at a table waiting for others) and 21 players on the NLHE tables.

There you have it, 27 people playing cash ring games at the moment on UB. I knew things were bad, but I never realized how bad they actually were!
